Description: The braderie de Lille is the largest flea market in Europe. On this occasion, about 10,000 exhibitors gather on 100km of stalls in the heart of the city. To accompany it all, food and drink stands, a carousel fair, and small concerts join the festivities. The history of this event dates back to the Middle Ages, a period during which the Flanders region was very commercially active. At the time, foreign merchants came exceptionally to sell their products for the occasion. The event only transformed into a garage sale at the beginning of the 16th century.
Good to know: The great challenge of the braderie de Lille is to beat the record of the mussel pile. More precisely, the pile of mussel shells* consumed by visitors during the event. As we know, moules-frites are a local specialty, prepared with sauces more delicious than each other. Restaurateurs accumulate the shells, with the objective of beating the consumption record of the previous year.
