The Loire Valley is the birthplace of the kings of France, the perfect place for all architecture, history and botany enthusiasts. Castles, medieval fortresses, parks and gardens are legion in this internationally renowned region.
Symbol of France's absolute power, they are today a showcase of the French art of living. Here's a list of 15 castles to see absolutely with family or friends when you're visiting the region.

The château de Chambord
Born from the imagination of King François 1er and the work of Leonardo da Vinci, this castle combines harmony of curves and modernity. Although the architect's name remains unknown (as it was lost during the French Revolution, along with all the plans and writings on the construction), this castle is a true Renaissance jewel.
Among the curiosities and innovations of the time that distinguish it, we can mention: the famous double-revolution staircase where you don't cross paths, the double-pit latrines, a ventilation duct, the terrace waterproofing system...
The ornamentations are absolutely sublime: pilasters, medallions, candelabra and scrollwork embellish the facades with their finesse and multiplicity of motifs. The French-style gardens form a green setting around the château de Chambord.

The château de Chenonceau
This other Renaissance jewel is nicknamed the castle of Ladies, as it was mainly occupied by ladies: Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de Médicis, Louise Dupin... From the 16th to the 14th century.
It is easily recognizable thanks to its 5 arches that span the Cher. The architectural ensemble is organized between the main building and its corner turrets, the long gallery, and the tour des Marques.
Twenty rooms are open to visit including: the guards' room, the Chapel, the green cabinet, the bedrooms of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis, the gallery, the François 1er and Louis XIV salons... All decorated with magnificent antique furniture, paintings by old masters and rare tapestries.

The château d'Ussé
This castle is the one that inspired Charles Perrault to write his famous tale: Sleeping Beauty. This harmonious and fairy-like castle, which was once a fortress, has been modified over time into a castle where magic has never ceased to work: flowered terrace with view over the Indre, the keep, the walkway...
It is possible to relive certain scenes from the tale when visiting the château d'Ussé. Between history and legend, you will be captivated by the richness of the furniture, the carved wood panels, the famous trompe-l'œil ceiling perfectly imitating marble, a collection of weapons, oriental objects, magnificent 16th century tapestries...

The château d'Azay-le-Rideau
Honoré de Balzac said about this castle that it was a "faceted diamond set by the Indre". This 16th century castle has also experienced multiple transformations with each change of owner.
Prestigious, this fortress, surrounded by moats, displays French Renaissance style architecture with large windows, slate roofs, as well as a construction that is both complex and elegant.
The interior is also richly decorated with ceilings with sophisticated decoration, furnishing bringing a luxurious atmosphere, a magnificent staircase overlooking the courtyard where ermines and salamanders are proudly displayed. Finally, the garden is simply sumptuous.

The château d'Amboise
This former stronghold is a perfect transition between Medieval and Renaissance architecture, it offers an exceptional view over the town of Amboise. Many artists have walked the floors of this castle including Leonardo da Vinci who rests in the chapel of Saint-Hubert.
You will appreciate the refinement of the French Renaissance style furniture, the architecture of the towers, the Renaissance garden, the richness of the fauna (80 bird species).

The château de Blois
This royal castle has the particularity of presenting 4 very different French architectural styles, namely:
- The medieval fortress (13th century);
- The Gothic wing of Louis XII (15th century);
- The Renaissance wing of François Ier (16th century) and its famous spiral staircase;
- The classical wing of Gaston d'Orléans (17th century).
Many prestigious personalities have lived in this castle including 7 kings and 10 queens of France. Many thrilling events took place there. The terrace garden of Foix offers a breathtaking view over the city of Blois.

The château de Cheverny
Thunder of thunder of Brest, this is perhaps the expression that will come to the lips of comic book fans of Tintin when approaching the château de Cheverny, because this one looks like Marlinspike Hall!
And for good reason, Hergé was indeed inspired by the architecture of this castle to draw that of Captain Haddock! Moreover, an immersion in the universe of the famous detective and his companion is offered on site.

The château de Valençay
This castle which was the residence of a minister of Napoleon: Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, was in his image. The latter created, in his time, a place of instruction for little girls, relief for the sick, a charity office, he had a school built for boys as well as a town hall. You can admire in this castle historical furniture of great richness.

The château de Saumur
Located on the historic route of the Valley of Kings and on the historic route of the Plantagenets, this castle belonged to the counts of Anjou then to the Plantagenets before becoming a royal fortress under Saint-Louis then a sumptuous palace in the 14th century. It would in turn be a prison, an arms and ammunition depot in the 19th century, before being restored and opened to the public from 1912.

The château de Chaumont-sur-Loire

The château de Brézé
