The Blloku district, from forbidden zone to Tirana's trendy heart

Southwest of the centre, the Blloku district is today one of the liveliest places in Tirana, with its cafés, pastry shops, boutiques and night bars. It is hard to imagine that it was long off-limits to ordinary people. The former bloc reserved for the elite

During the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha, Blloku, officially Ish-Blloku, was a strictly guarded bloc, inaccessible to the population. Only members of the Politburo, senior Party officials and their families could live there. This enclosed space embodied the privileges of the communist regime in the heart of an iron-fisted capital. Its reopening, after the fall of the regime, turned this symbol of the forbidden into a hotspot of urban life.

Today, Blloku blends business towers, lively terraces and fashionable spots, in a young, cosmopolitan atmosphere. It is the ideal district to grasp contemporary Tirana, the one that has turned the page on isolation. Strolling here, you measure the contrast between the place's locked past and its current buzz, one of the most telling stories of post-communist Albania.

Practical information

The Blloku district lies southwest of the centre of Tirana, near Skanderbeg Square, and is freely explored on foot. It is an urban area open at all times, with no ticket office, particularly lively in the evening. Broadly flat, it is easy to access; it is best explored on foot, as the centre is dense and traffic heavy.

Why was the Blloku district forbidden?
