Skanderbeg Square, the monumental heart of Tirana

In the centre of Tirana, the vast Skanderbeg Square stands out as one of the most emblematic public spaces in the Balkans. A pavement from across the country

Walking on its immense pavement, you discover a telling feature: the slabs come from different regions of Albania. This choice is not only aesthetic, it is symbolic, as if to bring the whole country together in the heart of the capital. At its centre stands the equestrian statue of Skanderbeg, the national hero, installed in 1968 for the five-hundredth anniversary of his death, the work of the sculptor Odhise Paskali.

It is a vast public space open at all times, with no ticket office, largely pedestrian and on the level, so easy to access. It is also the ideal starting point to reach most of the centre's sites on foot.
