Discreet but steeped in history, the castle of Tirana, or Kalaja e Tiranës, nestles in the very heart of the capital. It is hard to imagine that a real fortress once stood here: only a few stone walls remain. Fifteen centuries under a few walls

The site brings together more than fifteen centuries of history, a witness to the successive eras that shaped Tirana long before it became a capital. Of the original fortress only remnants of walls survive, long woven into the urban fabric. In 2018, the ensemble was redeveloped into an open complex, between the Murat Toptani pedestrian street and the Boulevard Jeanne d'Arc, blending heritage, restaurants and shops.

What to see

Here you discover the preserved old walls and a singular atmosphere, where the vestiges rub shoulders with the bustle of a contemporary living place. It is one of the few spots in Tirana that recalls the age of the site, between two busy thoroughfares. The walk is pleasant, halfway between a heritage stroll and urban wandering, right in the centre.

It is today an open complex, freely accessible in its circulation spaces; the hours of the shops and establishments it houses may vary. You wander through on foot, among the lanes and the vestiges.
