Tirana Castle

Here you are at the Castle of Tirana, known as Kalaja e Tiranës, an unassuming place that carries more than fifteen centuries of history, hidden in the very heart of the capital. At first glance, it’s hard to imagine that a fortress once stood here. Today, only a few stone walls remain, partly covered in vines, the last traces of a site founded in the Byzantine period and rebuilt under Emperor Justinian in the sixth century. Back then, the castle held a strategic position at the crossroads of major routes linking north and south, east and west, and it formed the original nucleus of what would later become Tirana. Under Ottoman rule, the fortress was strengthened and came under the control of powerful local families, including the Toptani, before serving as an important military stronghold. In the early nineteenth century, however, the Ottoman authorities chose to reassert direct control over the region, and in 1832 they ordered the castle to be destroyed, eliminating any fortification that could be used as a base for local revolts. Largely dismantled and eventually forgotten, the site was given a new life in 2018, when it was transformed into a lively pedestrian area. As you walk through it today, you’re moving within the former castle enclosure, now filled with craft shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants. In this unconventional castle, you can wander freely, enjoy a coffee beside a thousand-year-old wall, or simply pause and relax in the middle of the city.
