Princes Bridge
The Melbourne audio-guided tour takes you across Princes Bridge, which occupies the site of one of the oldest crossings of the Yarra River and offers a southern entrance to the historic centre. Its central position makes it a key place for the city's great celebrations.
A historic crossing
Princes Bridge spans the Yarra at the site of a very ancient crossing. Before colonisation, these banks were the territory of the Wurundjeri people, whose presence on these lands predates the arrival of the settlers by several millennia, and whose memory deserves respect. The present arch bridge today links Swanston Street, to the north, with the Southbank district, to the south.
What there is to see
From Princes Bridge, the overall view of the CBD is magnificent: the tall glass buildings, the design buildings of Federation Square and the Gothic silhouette of St Paul's Cathedral. A central crossing point, the bridge is also a gathering place during major festivals, such as New Year, and an ideal setting to photograph the city and its river.
Practical information
Princes Bridge is crossed freely, on foot, over the Yarra River, between the centre of Melbourne and Southbank. Accessible at any time, it offers fine views of the CBD, particularly enjoyable at sunset. It is a quick and essential stop during the walk.
