From a marsh to a modern district

Before colonisation, the south bank of the Yarra was a succession of marshes, lands inhabited by Aboriginal peoples, whose memory deserves consideration. When the city developed from 1835, this bank long remained as it was, before being developed. Today, Southbank has become a modern district, along the banks, mixing hotels, bars, galleries and performance halls.

What there is to see

Along the Southbank Promenade, you enjoy the banks of the Yarra, the terraces and the views of the CBD skyscrapers. The district houses major cultural venues and the Eureka Skydeck observation tower, whose platform offers a spectacular panorama of Melbourne. It is one of the liveliest areas of the city, by day and by night.

Practical information

Southbank is freely walkable on foot, south of the Yarra, opposite the centre of Melbourne. The walk along the banks is accessible at any time. Bars, restaurants, galleries and the Eureka Skydeck tower follow their own hours; the climb to the tower is ticketed. It is best to check the information in advance.
