St John's Cathedral, Gothic jewel of Brisbane
The Brisbane audio-guided tour stops you before St John's Cathedral, the largest and most striking religious building in the city, approached with quiet respect. It is the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane.
More than a century of construction
Its foundation stone was laid in 1901, but the cathedral was only completed one hundred and eight years later, in 2009. Throughout this long period, a close collaboration united the requests of the clergy, the skill of the stonemasons and the work of the architects. The result is one of the few great Gothic buildings entirely built in stone in Australia.
What there is to see
The cathedral stands out for its neo-Gothic style, its stone vaults and its stained glass. With respect for silence, you take time to admire its scale and its delicacy. It is a living place of worship and a high place of the religious heritage of Brisbane, which stands out by its splendour amid the modern city.
