The State Library Victoria

The Melbourne audio-guided tour leads you before the immense State Library Victoria. Created in 1854 under the name of Melbourne Public Library, it is the oldest public library in Australia and one of the first in the world to be free.

A temple of knowledge

It was the governor of Victoria, supported by a colonial judge, who decided to give the city a library, convinced that access to knowledge was essential to the development of the community. They wanted a place of learning open to all, free of charge, in a building worthy of this ambition. Its heritage architecture makes it one of the most remarkable buildings in Melbourne.

What there is to see

The jewel of the library is the La Trobe reading room, topped by an immense octagonal dome that lets light fall on the star-arranged tables: one of the most beautiful reading spaces in the world. The library also preserves precious collections and hosts exhibitions. The lawn that stretches in front of the building is a relaxation spot appreciated by the people of Melbourne.

Practical information

The State Library Victoria is on Swanston Street, in the centre of Melbourne. Access is generally free, as at its foundation; opening hours vary by day and season. The La Trobe room and the exhibitions can be seen freely during opening hours; it is best to check them in advance.
