Capuchin Crypt

The church on your right may look modest from the outside, but it houses the striking Capuchin Crypt. This Baroque church was built between 1622 and 1632, and ever since, it has been the burial place of the Habsburg dynasty—including 12 emperors and 19 empresses. The crypt holds 150 sarcophagi, and many of them are true works of art. The most magnificent are those of Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz Joseph, and Empress Sisi. What’s more, funerals continue to take place here to this day. The last Empress of Austria, Zita, was laid here to rest in 1989, followed by her son, the former crown prince and politician Otto von Habsburg, in 2011. The crypt lies beneath the church, and you need to buy a ticket to enter.
