Hofburg Palace
The Hofburg
The Vienna audio-guided tour brings you to Heldenplatz, the historic Heroes' Square, opening in front of the Hofburg. Former imperial palace of the Habsburgs, the Hofburg is one of the largest palace complexes in the world and the heart of Austrian power through the centuries.
The Habsburg palace
Until the 19th century, Heldenplatz was part of Vienna's enclosure, where a bastion protected the Hofburg. During the War of the Fifth Coalition, Napoleon's troops blew it up before occupying the city. Later, under Franz Joseph, the cleared space became this Heroes' Square, designed as part of a great imperial forum that never came to be. The Hofburg, winter residence of the Habsburgs (their summer residence being Schonbrunn), was the seat of most of the rulers of Austrian history.
What there is to see
From Heldenplatz, the view opens onto the Neue Burg, the new castle forming a recent wing of the palace. The complex now houses museums, including the Sisi Museum dedicated to Empress Elisabeth, the imperial apartments, as well as institutions and, since 1946, the official residence of the Austrian federal president. It is an essential stop to grasp the imperial history of the city.
Practical information
The Hofburg is in the heart of Vienna; Heldenplatz and the palace courtyards can be walked freely. Visiting the museums (Sisi Museum, imperial apartments and other collections) is ticketed, with hours and prices varying by season. As the complex is very large, it is best to allow time and check the information in advance.
