Maria Theresa Square
Maria-Theresien-Platz
The Vienna audio-guided tour brings you to Maria-Theresien-Platz, framed by two twin palaces housing the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. At the centre stands the imposing monument dedicated to Empress Maria Theresa.
Empress Maria Theresa
Maria Theresa of Austria was the only woman to reign over the Habsburg Empire. On the death of her father Charles VI, who had altered the law of succession to allow the eldest child to inherit regardless of sex, she nevertheless had to fight to assert her position. Mother of sixteen children, including Marie Antoinette, she remains one of the most appreciated figures of the imperial family, which explains the tribute this square pays her.
What there is to see
The empress is depicted seated on her throne, surrounded by her generals at the four corners and her advisers on the sides. The monument, several metres high, is ringed by French formal gardens dotted with fountains and sculptures. On either side, the two museums offer perfectly symmetrical facades, among the finest of the Ring.
Practical information
Maria-Theresien-Platz is on the Ring, facing the Hofburg, and can be seen freely. The gardens and the monument are accessible at any time. Visiting the two museums that frame it is, however, ticketed, with hours and prices varying by season; it is best to check in advance.
