Memorial Against War and Fascism
The Memorial against War and Fascism
The Vienna audio-guided tour leads you to Albertinaplatz, before the Memorial against War and Fascism. This place of memory, dedicated to the victims of the Nazi period in Austria, is approached with gravity and contemplation.
A place of memory
On this site, before 1945, stood a bourgeois building, the Philipphof, completely destroyed in an air raid: hundreds of people sheltering in its cellars lost their lives there, and only one hundred and eighty bodies could be recovered. The land, declared unbuildable, was chosen in 1988, the year of remembrance, by the mayor of Vienna to erect this memorial there. It was the first monument in the city to deal openly with Austria's Nazi past.
What there is to see
The memorial brings together several sculptures, including the Gate of Violence, carved in stone, which evokes the suffering inflicted during that period. The whole, the work of the sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka, invites reflection on the victims of Nazism and of the war. It is contemplated in silence, with the respect due to a place of commemoration.
Practical information
The memorial is on Albertinaplatz, in the open, in the centre of Vienna, near the Opera and the Albertina Museum. It can be seen freely, at any time. A place of memory dedicated to the victims, it calls for a contemplative and respectful attitude from visitors.
