Princely gardens

The Mirabell Gardens belong to the château of the same name, located a little further on. They are baroque gardens, drawn in the French style, laid out in 1690 by the archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun. The château had been built from 1606 by another archbishop known for the many buildings he had realised in the city, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. Flowered beds, alleys, statues and fountains compose an ensemble of great elegance, a witness to the refined taste of the prince-archbishops.

What there is to see

The gardens unfold their geometric beds, their fountains and their mythological statues, offering fine perspectives over the château and, in the distance, over the Hohensalzburg fortress. A much-appreciated place of walk, they are also famous for having served as a setting for film scenes. It is an essential stop, peaceful and photogenic, in the heart of Salzburg.

The Mirabell Gardens are on the right bank of the Salzach, in the centre of Salzburg. A public space, they are generally freely accessible during the day, the hours possibly varying according to the season. Access is on the level.
