A palace built out of love

The Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 at the request of the prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who wanted to offer his beloved a fine residence for her and their children. A century later, the palace was entirely rebuilt in the baroque style, then become predominant throughout the city. It was at this time that the gardens that surround it were also laid out, among the most admired of Salzburg.

The palace charms with its baroque architecture and its famous grand staircase adorned with sculptures. Its marble hall, sumptuously decorated, today hosts concerts and ceremonies. Surrounded by its gardens, the palace forms a harmonious ensemble that is among the emblematic images of Salzburg. It is a major stop on the right bank of the Salzach.

The Mirabell Palace is on the right bank of the Salzach, in the middle of its gardens, in the centre of Salzburg. Housing official and cultural functions, it cannot be entirely freely visited; its gardens and its surroundings are freely accessible, and certain halls open on the occasion of concerts or events, according to a variable schedule.
