The Mozart Denkmal
The Salzburg audio-guided tour has you discover the Mozart Denkmal, the monument dedicated to the most illustrious of the people of Salzburg. Installed on the square that bears his name, this statue is a veritable emblem of the city.
A statue unveiled in 1842
On 5 September 1842, a bronze statue was unveiled on Mozart Square, in tribute to the composer, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death. The unveiling took place before a large crowd, among whom were the sons of Mozart. The king of Bavaria Louis I took part in its realisation by financing notably the marble pedestal. It was the artists Ludwig von Schwanthaler and Johann Stiglmaier who sculpted it. At number 8 of the square lived Constanze, Mozart's wife, who passed away a few months before the unveiling and thus never saw the monument.
What there is to see
The bronze statue stands proudly in the centre of Mozart Square, surrounded by remarkable buildings such as the cathedral of St Rupert, St Michael's Church and the New Residence. The lively square houses the tourist office, shops and cafés where to take a break. It is one of the best-known places of Salzburg, where the tribute to the composer takes on its full meaning.
