Mozarthaus
The Mozart house museum
The Vienna audio-guided tour stops you before the Mozart house museum, the Mozarthaus. The composer lived in about a dozen residences in the city, but this is the only one preserved to this day and turned into a museum, in the heart of the historic centre.
The composer's Viennese home
The house, at number 5 Domgasse, had only two floors in the 17th century before being enlarged in 1716. Mozart rented a comfortable first-floor apartment there, of four large rooms, two small drawing rooms and a kitchen, from 1784 to 1787. It is the place where he lived the longest and, it is said, where he was happiest. Already a renowned artist, he received there a circle of friends from high society.
What there is to see
It was in this apartment that Mozart composed one of his greatest operas, The Marriage of Figaro, inspired by Beaumarchais's play. The visit allows you to immerse yourself in the daily life and creative world of this musical genius, the pride of the city. The various floors present his era, his circle and his Viennese work.
Practical information
The Mozarthaus is at 5 Domgasse, in the old town, not far from St Stephen's Cathedral. The visit requires a ticket; hours and prices vary with the season, so it is best to check in advance. The museum is laid out over several levels, in the composer's very apartment and its exhibition spaces.
