The Golden Hall

Inaugurated on 6 January 1870, the Musikverein is the seat of the Vienna Philharmonic Society and the home of the Philharmonic Orchestra. It is in its legendary Golden Hall, with its sumptuous decoration, that the famous Vienna New Year's Concert takes place each year, broadcast around the world. The acoustic quality of the place has made it one of the references among concert halls.

What there is to see

On your right, the Kunstlerhaus, the house of artists, was built at the end of the 19th century to host exhibitions of painting, sculpture, applied arts and architecture. Financed by a group of artists, as the Musikverein was by musicians, it was renovated in 2020 and now focuses mainly on contemporary art, with a high-quality programme.

The Musikverein is near Karlsplatz, in the centre of Vienna. The facade can be seen freely; access to the Golden Hall is in the context of concerts and certain guided tours, whose programming, hours and prices vary by season. It is best to check the programme in advance.
