The Alter Markt
The Salzburg audio-guided tour stops you on the Alter Markt, the old market square. Laid out as early as the thirteenth century to host the merchants, it remains a lively space in all seasons.
A square lively since the Middle Ages
Since the thirteenth century, the Alter Markt has hosted the merchant life of Salzburg. In summer, its large terraces unfold to allow inhabitants and visitors to have a drink and relax. In winter, people like to stop there to drink a hot chocolate and enjoy a warm atmosphere, despite the harshness of the climate. In its centre stands St Florian's fountain, and it is here that the smallest house of the city hides.
What there is to see
The square charms with its St Florian's fountain, its fine façades and its lively terraces. Just opposite, wedged between two large buildings, the smallest house of Salzburg can be discovered, much lower than its neighbours, which today houses a shop one can enter to measure its smallness. It is a convivial stop, ideal for a break in the heart of the old town.
