St Peter's Church
The Salzburg audio-guided tour invites you to quiet contemplation before the beautiful church attached to St Peter's Abbey. First built in the Romanesque style, it today displays a rich baroque adornment, in the image of the abbey that surrounds it.
From Romanesque to baroque
Originally raised in the Romanesque style in the seventh century, the church was profoundly altered over time. It today reveals fine chapels, one of which has kept its original Gothic style, while the rest of the building has been redecorated in the rococo taste. Its vault is adorned with frescoes representing scenes from the life of Saint Peter. This superposition of styles tells the long history of the sanctuary and of the abbey that houses it.
What there is to see
Inside, in contemplation, the visitor discovers a richly decorated nave, its chapels of varied styles and the frescoes of the vault dedicated to Saint Peter. The Gothic chapel, a vestige of the origins, contrasts with the rococo exuberance of the whole. It is a precious testimony of sacred art and of the religious history of Salzburg.
