The Stadtpark
The Vienna audio-guided tour invites you to pause at the Stadtpark, one of the city's oldest parks. Opened in 1862, Vienna's first public park, it is loved by locals for its English-style gardens, its botanical richness and the river Wien that flows through it.
The park of the waltz
Covering about 65,000 square metres, the English-style park hosts a wide variety of plant species. The river Wien divides it in two and adorns it with small bridges. The Kursalon, inaugurated in 1867 for hydrotherapy treatments, now serves as a concert venue. Further on stands the gilded statue of Johann Strauss, the king of the waltz, author of the famous Blue Danube and the Radetzky March: it is the most photographed monument in the park.
What there is to see
You stroll along the river, among lawns, flowerbeds and ponds, encountering the many statues of composers and artists. The Kursalon hosts concerts dedicated to Viennese music. An amusing anecdote accompanies the Radetzky March: during concerts, custom has it that the audience claps along during the refrain.
Practical information
The Stadtpark is on the Ring and can be visited freely; it is a public park ideal for a walk or a break. The statue of Johann Strauss is its highlight. The Kursalon concerts are, however, ticketed, with hours and prices varying by programme; it is best to check in advance.
