The walk through the Coteaux de la Citadelle

The Liège audio-guided tour invites you to take the walk through the Coteaux. The Coteaux de la Citadelle form a green space of ninety hectares a stone's throw from the centre, blending nature, old lanes and spectacular viewpoints over the ardent city.

Listed natural heritage

Listed three stars in the Guide Vert and partly Natura 2000, the Coteaux are crossed by a series of paths, staircases and terraces running through eight zones, from Favechamps to the Vivegnis hillside, by way of the Terrasses des Minimes and the Montagne de Bueren. This vast ensemble bears witness to the military, religious and agricultural history of the hill.

What there is to see

You discover medieval remains, terraced gardens, walls of coal sandstone and religious ensembles, such as the former Minimes convent. The start is at number 38, where an entrance leads to the path. As you climb, panoramas open over the rooftops of Liège and the Meuse valley. It is one of the finest walks in the city.

Practical information

The walk through the Coteaux de la Citadelle is done on foot, by paths and sometimes steep staircases, in central Liège. Access is free; good walking shoes are essential. The uphill route requires a fair level of fitness and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
