Provincial Palace

Considered one of Wallonia’s most beautiful buildings, both for its architecture and impressive size, the provincial palace was Namur’s most important structure until the 18th century. Its story begins in 1732, when it originally served as the bishop’s palace, home to the city’s bishop—hence the nearby Saint-Aubin Cathedral. Due to financial difficulties and heavy debts incurred during construction, the last bishop eventually lost ownership around the time of the French Revolution. In 1830, a new chapter began as the palace transitioned from its episcopal role to become the provincial government’s headquarters. Today, the building houses the government and administration of the province of Namur.
