More than its history, which began in 1621 as a chapel for the Jesuit college, this religious building captivates with its noble architectural presence. Look up and you’ll immediately see what we mean. From its flat screen façade to the spiral ornaments and pilasters, it’s a pure gem of baroque style. Here, nothing is held back—boldness is the name of the game, if you catch our drift! But all this exquisite work is actually a faithful copy of the original, which had to be restored and rebuilt identically after suffering extensive damage. It took a painstaking 24 years of restoration to get as close as possible to the church that dazzled Baudelaire in 1866—the same amount of time it took to build it in the first place. Open free to the public, we strongly recommend you step inside. The moment you cross the threshold, we bet your eyes will be drawn straight to the stunning vaulted ceiling. Sculpted from Maastricht tuff, a soft limestone, this masterpiece showcases exquisite vegetal motifs. At just 400 years old, Saint-Loup Church is far from outdated! Concerts are even held here, proving that it’s not just the organ that’s allowed to resonate within these walls.
