The Korenlei and Graslei Quays

Two of the most beautiful spots in the city—Korenlei and Graslei—once formed the heart of Ghent’s bustling medieval port. Situated at the confluence of the rivers Lys and Scheldt, Ghent quickly grew into a major economic hub between the 11th and 16th centuries. It may be hard to believe today, but back then, it was the second-largest city in Europe after Paris! The canals were vital—not just for textile trade, which dominated the city, but also for transporting a variety of other goods. The names Korenlei ("grain quay") and Graslei ("grass quay") suggest the diversity of Ghent’s economic activities. Today, cargo ships have been replaced by sightseeing boats, but the area still holds onto its historic charm. Between the old ornate facades, the calm of the water, and the café terraces buzzing with life, this is one of the best spots to experience Ghent’s timeless magic.
