A temple of culture of the nineteenth century

Built in the nineteenth century and inaugurated in 1827, the Royal Theatre rises on the Sint-Baafsplein, where, it is said, the city was born. While the Belfry evokes the bourgeoisie of the past and the Saint Bavo Cathedral the clergy, the Royal Theatre recalls, for its part, the intellectual elite that worked to spread culture in the country. A mission still current: season after season, great Flemish and Dutch actors make their debut there before pursuing their careers beyond the borders. Listed as a protected monument since 1986, the theatre also serves as a place of relaxation, with its café from which one enjoys a fine view over the square.
