The Saute-Mouton

Place des Carmes is a small but lively square in the center of Liège, famous for its terraces and welcoming atmosphere. Right in the middle of the fountain stands “Le Saute-mouton”, a bronze sculpture created in 1973 by Liège artist Mady Andrien. She chose to capture a timeless scene: children playing leapfrog, frozen in the joyful energy of the game. The piece radiates spontaneity, vitality, and the carefree spirit of childhood. Originally placed at the entrance of a sports center, the sculpture was later moved here, where it now blends perfectly with the play of water from the fountain. This simple childhood game, built on trust and complicity, takes on a poetic dimension in the heart of the city. And if leapfrog sparks your curiosity, Liège has another version waiting for you. A little further away, on the Esplanade Saint-Léonard, stands “L’Envol de la Wallonie”. Bigger and more modern, this monument reimagines the same theme of leaping, but this time as a symbol of collective drive, solidarity, and hope for the future. Rising nearly five meters high, it makes a striking impression. To see it, just cross Kennedy Bridge and walk past the aquarium along the banks of the Meuse.
