Funicular or Breakneck Stairs

It’s time to head to Upper Town, at the top of Cap Diamant—the name early explorers gave to Quebec’s cliff, believing they discovered diamonds there. To reach the top, you have two options. For a few dollars, you can take the historic funicular, in service since 1879. The entrance is through the Louis Jolliet House, to your left. The ride offers beautiful views of the surrounding area and a unique way to arrive at Dufferin Terrace. Or, you can take the famous Breakneck Stairs, in front of you. This is the oldest staircase in Quebec! It was built to replace an extremely steep path that caused countless accidents. The wooden steps were added in 1680 to make the climb safer and more manageable. The staircase will lead you to Rue de la Montagne, where you’ll find another historic stairway—the Frontenac Stairs—which also take you to Dufferin Terrace.
