Massey Hall, the oldest concert hall in the country

The Toronto audio-guided tour stops you before Massey Hall, known as the oldest and most honoured concert hall in the country. Opened in 1894, it gave new momentum to Toronto's music industry.

A father's tribute

The hall was born of the will of one man, Hart Massey, a wealthy industrialist and son of the city. In building this edifice, he wished to honour his son Charles, taken by typhoid. Until the 1920s, Massey Hall was the only national venue able to host musical performances of every kind, which gave it a head start and lasting fame.
