Nathan Phillips Square
Nathan Phillips Square, the central plaza of Toronto
The Toronto audio-guided tour leads you to Nathan Phillips Square, which is far more than the forecourt of the city hall: it is the central plaza of the city. Named in memory of a former mayor, it was inaugurated in 1965.
From The Ward district to the public plaza
The square was laid out on the site of The Ward, a former immigrant district of the early twentieth century. It is now one of the main hosts of festivals and seasonal events. Among the most famous are the New Year celebrations and the annual Cavalcade of Lights festival, around the lighting of the Christmas tree.
What there is to see
The fountain pool, much loved, turns into an ice rink during winter, to the delight of families. The square also offers a fine view of the curved towers of the city hall. Lively all year round with festivals, concerts and markets, it is one of the emblematic meeting places of the people of Toronto.
Practical information
Nathan Phillips Square is at 100 Queen Street West, in front of Toronto City Hall. It is a public square freely accessible at all hours and on the level. The pool becomes an ice rink in winter; the programme of events runs throughout the year.
