The green lung of Santiago
The hill is the main element of the Parque Metropolitano, the largest park of Santiago. One finds there numerous paths, botanical gardens, playgrounds, swimming pools, the great national zoo of Chile and, at the summit, a statue of the Virgin twenty-two metres high, visible from all sides and become a symbol of the city. At its feet, a small chapel has hosted a service celebrated by Pope John Paul II.
What there is to see
From the summit, the view embraces the whole city and the Andes mountain range. One can climb the hill on foot or take the funicular, which leads to the observation point of the Terraza Bellavista. Between nature, panoramas and a place of contemplation at the foot of the Virgin, the Cerro San Cristobal is one of the favourite getaways of inhabitants as of visitors.
Practical information
The Cerro San Cristobal is part of the Parque Metropolitano, to the north of the Bellavista district, in Santiago. Access to the hill and the park is free; the funicular, the swimming pools, the zoo and access by vehicle are charged. The ascent on foot is not on the level; it is advisable to bring water and good shoes.
