The legacy of a Napoleonic general

The street pays tribute to Auguste de Marmont, a French general under Napoleon. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, when Dalmatia was briefly occupied by Napoleonic troops, Marmont governed the region and undertook to modernise Split: he had this straight European-style street laid out, in a city still labyrinthine, and installed there the first public streetlamps, a small urban revolution for the time. Today, the Marmontova is the chic shopping street, lined with international brands, Croatian concept stores, cafés, jewellers and art galleries. It is also a meeting place where the inhabitants like to stroll.
