Golden Gate and Statue of Gregory of Nin

You’re now standing in front of the Golden Gate, Porta Aurea in Latin, the grandest entrance to Diocletian’s Palace. This was where the emperor himself would pass through when arriving from the inland side, so you can imagine the impression it must have made when it was built in the early 4th century… and it still does today. The gate is flanked by two rectangular towers and decorated with niches that once held statues, most likely of Diocletian, Jupiter, and other imperial figures. It was both a formidable defensive structure and a carefully crafted symbol of prestige and power. But nowadays, the gate is just as famous for what stands right outside: a towering bronze statue of a robed man, holding an open book and pointing a finger toward the sky. This is Gregory of Nin, Grgur Ninski in Croatian, a key figure in Croatia’s medieval history. In the 10th century, Gregory was the bishop of Nin, a nearby town, and he fought for church services to be held in Old Croatian instead of Latin. It was a groundbreaking move at the time, strengthening the Croatian cultural and linguistic identity and allowing worshippers to better understand their faith. The statue, created in 1929 by Croatia’s most celebrated sculptor, Ivan Meštrović, stands over eight meters tall, radiating strength and wisdom. Look closely at his feet, you’ll notice the big toe is worn smooth from countless touches. Local legend says rubbing it brings good luck, especially if you make a wish, which explains why thousands of visitors, young and old, come to give it a polish, sometimes with great seriousness! Originally, the statue stood closer to the city center, but after World War II it was moved here, creating a striking sight: a medieval bishop facing the entrance to a Roman palace, like a bridge between two eras, two stories, two visions of power. Take a moment to admire the details, the texture of the bronze, the energy in the gesture, the focused expression, and don’t forget: make a wish, glance up at the sky… and give that toe a good rub. You never know!
