A square with the air of Venice

If one asks the way to an inhabitant, it is better to speak of the Prokurative, a nickname that refers to the Procuratie bordering Saint Mark's square in Venice. Surrounded on three sides by arcaded buildings with light red façades and round-arched windows, the square displays a resolutely Neo-Renaissance appearance. This Italian style was chosen in the nineteenth century by the mayor Antonio Bajamonti, a fervent admirer of Venice, at the time when Split was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but when Italian influences remained strong on the Dalmatian coast. Long the heart of social and cultural life, the Prokurative still hosts concerts and events, notably the famous popular music festival of Split, created in 1960.

The Republic Square charms with its Neo-Renaissance architecture, its arcades and its light red façades, which evoke Venice in the heart of Split. A lively place, it regularly transforms into an open-air stage for concerts and festivals. It is an elegant stop, ideal for soaking up the Mediterranean and cultural atmosphere of the city.
