The beating heart of Split

The original Riva was laid out at the beginning of the nineteenth century, under the Napoleonic Empire, then reworked by the Austrians; it then served for port exchanges. Little by little, it became the beating heart of the city, a seafront showcase. Today, it is a long ribbon of palm trees and pastel façades, with the palace of Diocletian as a backdrop. Here, everything happens in slow motion: the terrace cafés extend over dozens of metres, and drinking a coffee is an art of living. The Riva is also the place where the city expresses its emotions, whether it be a celebration, a sunset or the great matches of the Hajduk Split football club.

The Riva unfolds its palm trees, its pastel façades and its lively terraces, facing the sea and the palace of Diocletian. It is the ideal place to stroll, have a coffee and observe local life in slow motion. A veritable heart of Split, this promenade embodies the Mediterranean art of living, to be savoured at all hours of the day.

Practical information

The Riva promenade runs along the seafront of Split, at the foot of the palace of Diocletian. It can be walked freely on foot at all hours and on the level; its cafés and terraces follow their own hours.
