St. Dominic’s Church

The great Gothic bell tower rising above the waterfront belongs to the Church and Monastery of St. Dominic. The Dominicans settled here in 1265 and soon built this Gothic church, completed in the 14th century. Its façade is simple but elegant, marked by a large rose window, while the wooden ceiling shaped like a ship’s hull reflects the city’s deep ties to the sea. Take a closer look at the portal and you’ll see the Virgin Mary sheltered under her mantle, with Mary Magdalene on one side and Augustin Kažotić on the other—a son of Trogir who became a bishop, was later beatified, and is still fondly remembered here. Behind the church lies a 15th-century cloister, a peaceful oasis with a Mediterranean garden, graceful Gothic columns, and finely carved reliefs, making it one of the quietest and most contemplative corners of town. Inside, the monastery holds precious treasures: a polyptych by Blaž Jurjev Trogiranin, the greatest master of Dalmatian Gothic painting, and a deeply moving medieval Pietà. St. Dominic’s has shaped not only the religious and artistic life of Trogir, but also found unexpected fame when its cloister appeared in the Game of Thrones series as the city of Qarth.
