The Dominican monastery

The Dubrovnik audio-guided tour takes you to the Dominican monastery, a vast religious complex set within the city walls, renowned for its cloister and its garden.

Two centuries of construction

Like the Franciscans, the Dominican monks chose to settle inside the ramparts, and even before their confreres. The construction of their monastery, begun around 1300, was only completed two centuries later, which explains the mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles of the complex. Also struck by the 1667 earthquake, the Dominican monastery nevertheless preserves superb parts open to the public. One admires there notably a magnificent cloister with capitals adorned with plant motifs, as well as a patio planted with citrus and palm trees, which offers a peaceful and refined atmosphere.
