The Cathedral of the Assumption
The Dubrovnik audio-guided tour leads you to the Cathedral of the Assumption, a major Baroque building of the historic centre, whose dome dominates the roofs of the city.
A sanctuary rebuilt after the earthquake
The present cathedral succeeds several buildings. A first Romanesque church rose here in the twelfth century; legend has it that it was financed by the English king Richard the Lionheart, in thanks to the inhabitants for having saved him from a shipwreck near the neighbouring island of Lokrum. The violent earthquake of 1667 did not spare this building, and a new Baroque cathedral was built between 1671 and 1713 by Italian architects. Its large dome, clearly visible among the roofs, has become one of the first landmarks for visitors. The cathedral preserves precious treasures, including reliquaries linked to Saint Blaise, the patron saint of the city, honoured with great devotion.
