Centuries of protection

Raised between the eighth and sixteenth centuries, the surrounding walls ensured the protection of Dubrovnik for hundreds of years, when the former Republic of Ragusa needed it, for diplomacy often prevailed over armed conflicts with rivals. The wall encircles the city over about two kilometres, with heights sometimes reaching twenty-five metres. Remarkably accomplished and well preserved despite their great age and the rugged terrain on which they rest, these ramparts earned Dubrovnik, with its historic centre, to be inscribed on the world heritage of UNESCO in 1979.

The ramparts offer an exceptional walk all around the old town, with plunging views over the tiled roofs, the monuments and the Adriatic Sea. Towers, forts and bastions mark out this fortified route, one of the best preserved in Europe. To go around it is an unforgettable experience, which sums up on its own the grandeur and the history of Dubrovnik.

The ramparts encircle the old town of Dubrovnik over about two kilometres. The elevated route can be visited according to hours to be checked on site; access is generally subject to a charge and includes many steps, to be taken into account according to your mobility.
