The Ploče Gate

The Dubrovnik audio-guided tour presents you with the Ploče Gate, the eastern entrance of the old town, through which the caravans of merchants from the East once passed.

If the west of the city has the Pile Gate, the east is just as well served with the Ploče Gate, an integral part of the ramparts of Dubrovnik. Its present external version was built in 1628 by the architect Mihajlo Hranjac, more than eighty years after its western twin, even though a gate already existed here from the fifteenth century. It is through here that the caravans of merchants from the East passed to trade in Dubrovnik. As at the Pile Gate, it is reached by a stone bridge, a vestige of the time when a wooden drawbridge protected the passage. Surmounted by a statue of Saint Blaise, the Ploče Gate is backed by the Revelin fort, which reinforced the defence of this side of the ramparts.

The Ploče Gate offers a fine eastern entrance into the old town, over a stone bridge and under the gaze of a statue of Saint Blaise. Backed by the powerful Revelin fort, it evokes the era of the merchant caravans and the defensive system of Dubrovnik. It is an access point laden with history, to be discovered on the east side of the ramparts.

The Ploče Gate is to the east of the ramparts of Dubrovnik, backed by the Revelin fort. It can be crossed freely on foot at all hours, over a stone bridge; it is one of the main accesses to the old town.
