History

The Town Museum of Trogir occupies the splendid baroque palace Garagnin-Fanfogna, a building of the eighteenth century endowed with an interior courtyard and a grand staircase, that belonged to one of the most influential noble families of Dalmatia. The Garagnin were at once politicians, scholars and passionate collectors: their library gathered more than five thousand works, including some incunabula, among the very first printed books. Today, the museum retraces the history of Trogir over more than two millennia. On the ground floor, you discover antique vestiges, traces of the Greek then Roman city; upstairs, the salons reveal the life of the noble families, with portraits, furniture and coats of arms. Among the flagship pieces figure sculptures of Ivan Duknović, master of the Dalmatian Renaissance, a voting urn of the seventeenth century, and a trophy brought back from the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571, a unique Turkish war rooster. The museum also preserves traditional costumes, weapons, scientific instruments and everyday objects, witnesses of the cultural richness of the city.
