The Avenida de los Presidentes
The Havana audio-guided tour takes you onto the Avenida de los Presidentes, one of the finest arteries of the city, a long straight avenue that leads to the Malecón.
An open-air gallery of monuments
Lined with the former palaces of the bourgeoisie and adorned in its centre with a long row of gardens, the avenue, also called Calle G, is punctuated with monuments paying tribute to great figures of Latin America. One comes across Simón Bolívar, liberator of the continent, Benito Juárez, Salvador Allende, president of Chile who died in the Palacio de la Moneda during the coup d'état of 1973, or Eloy Alfaro. For Cuba, one finds José Miguel Gómez and Tomás Estrada Palma, first head of state of the country, whose statue, mutilated in 1959, is now reduced to two feet on a pedestal.
What there is to see
A veritable open-air art gallery, the avenue unfolds its gardens, its statues and its former bourgeois dwellings. It also hosts the Museum of Dance, cafés and schools, and comes alive particularly at the weekend. It is an ideal walk to stroll in the shade of the trees and to discover the great figures honoured by Cuba and Latin America.
