The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, in Copenhagen
The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is the most important sculpture museum of Copenhagen, with a surprising architecture. The Copenhagen audio-guided tour stops here to evoke this museum with its rich antique and painting collections, preceded by a column surmounted by the statue of Dante, the immense Florentine poet author of the Divine Comedy and father of the Italian language, honoured here for the six hundredth anniversary of his death.
History
You arrive in front of an imposing building, surprising by its architecture, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, the most important sculpture museum of the city, that also shelters paintings, notably by Monet. But before discovering it more closely, take a look at the great column erected in front, in the middle of the road. The statue that surmounts it represents Dante, this immense poet, writer, thinker and politician who left an indelible trace in History, notably thanks to his Divine Comedy, masterpiece of literature. This Italian, native of Florence, is also considered the father of the Italian language: he chose to write his work in Tuscan rather than in Latin, and the great writers who followed him did the same, laying the foundations of the Italian of today. Dante was also a man very committed to the politics of the Republic of Florence and its conflicts, which earned him successes but also a death sentence and an exile, preventing him from returning to Florence until his death of malaria, in 1321. The column was erected on the occasion of the six hundredth anniversary of this death.
