History

The Nyboders Mindestuer is doubtless the must-see of the district, for it is the only original building still preserved today. It dates from the seventeenth century and offers a fine example of the single-storey terraced houses built at the time to lodge the soldiers of the navy. In 1757, new two-storey houses were built in the district to host more people. But a century later, a great part of Nyboder was sold and demolished: that is why there subsist today only a few of these houses characteristic of Copenhagen, and a single original building. Despite numerous attempts at demolition, the building was preciously preserved thanks to its classification among the historic monuments of the city. It now shelters a museum open to visit, that allows you to understand the history of Nyboder and the daily life of the sailors who resided there, in a faithfully reconstituted setting.
