Viewpoint from the bridge
The viewpoint from the bridge, in Copenhagen
The Holmensbro bridge offers a fine view of the monuments lining the canal, including the site of the Stock Exchange of Copenhagen. The Copenhagen audio-guided tour stops here to evoke the Børsen, this Renaissance jewel built by Christian IV in the seventeenth century, whose twisted tower and façades tragically disappeared in the fire of April 2024, and that the city is today working to rebuild.
History
Here you are on the Holmensbro, one of the many bridges of the city, that spans a canal offering a fine view of several monuments. Just on the left stands the church where the admiral Niels Juel was buried. On the other side of the canal, a little further, a zone is today under construction: it is the reconstruction of the Børsen, the former Stock Exchange of Copenhagen. Victim of a great fire in April 2024, this monument almost entirely disappeared before the powerless eyes of the inhabitants, who saw one of the finest buildings of the city collapse. With its late Flemish and Dutch Renaissance architecture and its surprising twisted tower, more than fifty-six metres high, it was a building that did not go unnoticed. The tower unfortunately collapsed during the fire, along with the façades. Built by King Christian IV between 1619 and 1640, the Exchange had the mission of making the city a great commercial platform, and the king had made it one of the finest buildings of the capital. Its reconstruction is today underway.
