The historic quays of Prince Albert

You now enter the marina of Liverpool and its famous Albert Dock. It is the most visited site of the city, and even of England, London excepted. You are now part of the some five million visitors who go there each year, making the Albert quays the major tourist attraction of Liverpool. You will find there numerous museums, hotels, art galleries, as well as a wide variety of bars and restaurants installed in the old warehouses. But before being transformed into a place of entertainment, the Albert Dock was a revolutionary system of warehouses and quays. Inaugurated in 1846, they were so in honour of the prince consort, that is to say the husband of the queen of England of the time, Queen Victoria. Prince Albert had made the journey for the occasion, and it was the first time that Liverpool received a royal visit. Built entirely in brick, cast iron and stone, without any wood to limit the risks of fire, these docks were a technical feat for the era, the first fireproof warehouses of the country. Disused in the twentieth century, they were magnificently restored in the 1980s and inscribed in the heritage of UNESCO. Today, their red brick façades and their columns are reflected in the water of the basin, in a unique atmosphere. Historic quays and a tourist heart, the Royal Albert Dock is a fine stop of the discovery of Liverpool.
