The Great Guild

Among all the charming buildings lining Pikk Street, this building stands out immediately. With its unmistakably medieval architecture, arched stained-glass windows, heavy stone walls, and an imposing doorway, it could easily be mistaken for a church. But don’t let the appearance fool you, and let’s leave that title for the nearby Church of the Holy Spirit. First documented in 1325, this building served as the headquarters of the Great Guild for 500 years. As one of the most powerful institutions in medieval Tallinn, the guild protected the interests of married noble merchants, offering economic, social, and religious support. The Great Guild also functioned as a social venue, hosting everything from casual games of billiards, to lavish weddings for wealthy clients. Today, this remarkable space is home to the Estonian History Museum, where you can explore Tallinn’s past, and the pivotal role the Great Guild played in shaping trade and society in the medieval city.
