The Viru Gates

The picturesque and enchanting Viru Gates are often the first thing visitors see in Tallinn. These gates are one of the few remaining traces of the medieval city’s original fortifications, built in the 14th century. Back then, this entrance looked very different, with massive stone guard towers, a drawbridge, and a deep moat protecting the heart of the city. It must have been an imposing and intimidating sight. As warfare evolved and military technology advanced, the old gates became less effective, and eventually obsolete. Despite repeated efforts to reinforce and upgrade them, their strategic value plummeted. In the end, they were partially torn down, first in 1843, and again in 1888. Today, only the two round side towers remain, draped in ivy. Locals often call them the “Gates of the Past”. Passing between them feels like slipping through time, leaving the modern world behind and stepping into the Middle Ages. Why not see for yourself?
