We'd like to take a short break from your visit to introduce you to other places of interest outside the historical centre. One of the must-sees around Annecy is the bay of Talloires. This small village enjoys a privileged position right above the water and facing the mountains. You'll discover its 11th-century abbey, beautiful access to the lake and a host of luxury hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants. So don't hesitate to take the high road! You could also go for a walk on the Forclaz Pass or on the peaks of Mont Veyrier! The Alps are even more beautiful from the air! Why not take the plunge and fly over the lake and its surroundings? This is one of the most famous spots in France to go paragliding. Head to the town of Doussard, at the end of Lake Annecy. There are plenty of professionals to choose from, and the memory of soaring over this magnificent view is unforgettable. If you prefer to stick to the ground, you'll be spoilt for choice. You don't have to go far from Annecy or deep into the Alps, but there are plenty of beautiful walks to choose from. The great classic, and an absolute highlight of the area, is the Col de la Tournette, the highest peak overlooking the lake. This is a black-rated hike, reserved for experienced and skilled hikers. You'll walk along sublime mountain paths with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding area and often be escorted by ibex. At the top you will be rewarded with stunning views over the Alps and the Mont Blanc. The last part requires ladders, but don't worry, access is safe. Start from the Prés Rond car park on the Col de l'Aulp. Other hikes to explore include Semnoz, Mont-Veyrier, Taillefer, and Parmelan. Mountain professionals can advise you or guide you on routes suited to your level. Between Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Talloires, you'll find the Roc de Chère nature reserve. This small forest-covered mountain massif extending into the water is a true haven of protected nature. The reserve offers beautiful hiking trails, perfect for admiring the local wildlife and flora. Don't miss a visit to Menthon-Saint-Bernard with its romantic castle. A jewel of Savoyard architecture dating from the 10th century, it was tastefully renovated in the 14th century. Walt Disney is said to have used it as the inspiration for his Sleeping Beauty castle. Although many castles claim this title, the resemblance is striking. The site is open from April to December and offers great views of the mountains. Another famous castle in the region is Montrottier. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, this typically Savoyard fortress is one of the most beautiful in the region. Just 10km from Annecy, the castle houses a fascinating cabinet of curiosities that will take you back in time. Just below the castle you'll find the Gorges du Fier. Reaching a hight of over 25 metres, this immense gorge, is a magnificent natural show. This exceptional site is easy to discover thank to footbridges going over the water. And if you've got time to explore Haute-Savoie a little further, you can spend the day in La Clusaz or head to Chamonix to touch the sky from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi. Well, with all this, you've got plenty of things to do if you feel like staying in the area for a while.
