The Bayonne market hall and the Moulis House
A gourmet stop on the Bayonne audio-guided tour, the market hall reveals all the richness of the local gastronomy. Bayonne ham, Basque cake, Espelette pepper, piperade, Basque chicken: the Bayonne and Basque specialities have been revealed here for more than one hundred and fifty years.
A high place of Basque gastronomy
In the market hall, the enticing smells blend with the convivial atmosphere: ham, chocolate, cheese, all products that make Bayonne's reputation. Just opposite stands an imposing building, probably the finest half-timbered house in the city.
What to see
The Moulis House, built in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, displays a typical Renaissance decor, in flamboyant red and luminous yellow, emblematic of the Basque Country. After exploring the market stalls, take time to admire this splendid timber-framed facade.
